Health Tip: Just add Water - Use Tea Tree Oil for a Natural Cleanser

Tea tree oil is a staple in my Pilates studio and now at Hilliard Studio Method.

Native to Australia, tea tree oil has been used for thousands of years by aboriginal tribes and now is recognized by the scientific community for its tremendous medicinal uses. Tea tree oil has natural properties that kill all types of bacteria, fungus and viruses. It’s even been shown to kill certain bacteria that are antibiotic resistant.  I use the clean, fresh smelling stuff on everything from my workout equipment, as a housecleaning agent, as well as applying it to my skin for minor cuts and inflammations.  It is a natural go-to for all sorts of skins ailments like fever blisters, sunburn, rashes, dandruff and athlete’s foot. Ever left the nail salon and wondered if that bowl you just soaked your feet in 20 minutes was totally clean? A couple of drops eases the mind and kills whatever might be lurking.

For general use, 10-12 drops in a medium-sized spray bottle is all you need with water. So when you’re cleaning off your mat after a tough HSM workout spray a little on your skin for a quick refresher.

Health Tip: Drink Your Greens
Powder greens are a great way to get all the veggies, enzymes and nutrients our bodies thirst for in one quick tasty scoop. I love Catie’s Organic Greens, which is chocked full of all types of greens, grasses, probiotics, roots, seeds and spices.  Mix a scoop with a glass of 100% fruit juice + water, or better yet with my all time favorite morning smoothie that gets you off on the right nutritional foot and keeps you going all morning!

HSM Signature Smoothie, adapted from Spent:
¼ to ½ avocado
½ lime
½ to 1 cup of frozen organic blueberries (or whatever fruit you have on hand)
1 scoop organic greens powder
1 scoop vanilla whey powder
1-2 tablespoons of ground flax or chia seeds (Catie’s Organic Greens has flax and chia seeds already included but I like to add more – bring on the Omega 3’s!)
1 cup coconut water (less if you like a thicker consistency)
2 - 4 cubes of ice
Cinnamon or spice of choice for added flavor and nutrition
Blend with a hand blender or smoothie blender and enjoy!
* if you prefer a sweeter drink, add a dash of raw agave nectar

Health Tip: Oil Up Your Greens

As reported this week in The Washington Post, eating fat along with your raw veggies will actually help you absorb fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A and E that are found in leafy greens and vegetables like carrots. But again, not all fats are created equal. Choosing an olive oil-based dressing over a cream, mayonnaise or soybean oil-base is preferable for weight control and clean eating. For a quick and delish dressing, combine a tablespoon of good extra virgin olive oil with lemon juice and some crushed salt and pepper, whisk, and throw in your greens, veggies and maybe a little avocado, another source of a healthy fat. For more complex flavor, combine extra virgin olive oil with stone ground mustard, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper and a dab of honey or agave nectar, mix and drizzle on greens. Either way, skimping on the oil when it comes to your salad cheats you out of the nutrients that make noshing the crispy stuff worthwhile.

Garlic to the Rescue!

July 4th and Hotdogs go hand and hand. Unfortunately the carcinogens found in processed meats like hot dogs also go hand in hand. The latest research shows that taking a daily capsule or eating the equivalent of one clove of garlic a day may help to offset the process that turns nitrates (found in hot dogs and other processed meat) into carcinogens. An herb that spices up just about any dish and fights cancer? – Bring it on!
